May act as a lead worker and give direction to Lifeguards and student aides.Essential Functions/Duties & ResponsibilitiesThe duties listed are intended only as Illustrative examples of the various types of work that may be performed by individuals in this classification. Any of the following duties may be performed. These examples are not necessarily performed by all incumbents and do not include all specific essential functions and responsibilities the incumbent may be expected to perform.Performs both simple and complex tasks associated with swimming pool operations, mechanics, light maintenance, and scheduling of aquatic spects and adjusts chemical levels as appropriate.Ensures all assigned staff maintain constant vigil over patrons and effects rescues of persons in danger.Oversees and implements procedures related to systems for circulation, emergency shut-off, and hydrodynamics.Employs methods or teaching techniques as outlined by the American Red Cross. Provides on-site training to staff members.May assist with registration of swim classes.Enforces all rules and policies of the swimming pool.Utilizes life saving techniques and responds effectively to emergency situations in and around the pool, including emergencies on towers, above-ground play equipment and slides.Renders first aid and artificial respiration as required. Uses training and certification in AED operation to implement life-saving procedures.Assume assigned duties connected with the maintenance of the swimming pool.Ensures all assigned staff wears uniform and insignia at all times when on duty.Maintains safe operating practices; assures compliance with proper safety procedures, rules, and regulations.Provides conflict resolution and problem solving for issues arising with customers and assigned staff.May provide on-site leadership and directoin to cashiers, concessions, and other contracted personnel.May assist with the planning and implementation of aquatic special events and department-wide recreation initiatives.May assist with publicity and marketing of programs and the facility.Provides information on other programs and services offered by the Albany Parks & Recreation Department.Operates a motor vehicle safely and legally if required.Maintains regular job attendance and adherence to working hours.Maintains safe operating practices; assures compliance with proper safety procedures, rules and regulations.Supervision/Lead Work ExercisedThis is a non-supervisory position. Lead work/coordination of the work of others is not a typical function assigned to this position. Incumbents in this position may act as lead worker and direct activities of Lifeguards, Instructors, student aides, and volunteers.Qualifications & Requirementsa) EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEMust have or be able to obtain the following certifications: current Water Park, Lifeguard, First Aid, AED, and CPR/PR. Must have or be able to obtain Water Safety Instructor certification.b) KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESMust be comfortable working with participants of all ages, including a high percentage of youth.Skill in operation of tools and equipment commonly used at aquatic facilities.May require training in water park guarding with specific training on water slides, shallow area play, rescue skills related to zero depth facilities, and special shallow water training in neck and back injuries depending on the specific area of assignment.Ability to recognize and prevent hazardous situations.Ability to present positive public image through quality of work, appearance and good public relations.Check chemicals and equipment as required and report and deficiencies to your lead worker or supervisor.c) SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSLead Lifeguards must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's accordance with Human Resources substance abuse policies, incumbents in this position are subject to the City's Drug & Alcohol testing program.Qualification standards include a requirement that the individual shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of the individual or others in the workplace.Demonstrate character values of caring, respect, honesty and responsibility in all dealings with members, guests, volunteers and fellow staff.
