General Description

The Albany Parks & Recreation Department is accepting applications to fill a temporary, part-time Aquatic Instructor position. This position may work 5-20 hours per week, as needed for class schedules.

GENERAL PURPOSE

Plan, organize and instruct aquatic group fitness classes keeping within guidelines and standards for specific area of expertise. Creates and maintains a safe environment that promotes wellness and individual participation; does related work as required.

Essential Functions/Duties & Responsibilities

The duties listed are intended only as illustrative examples of the various types of work that may be performed by individuals in this classification. Any of the following duties may be performed. These examples are not necessarily performed by all incumbents and do not include all specific essential functions and responsibilities the incumbent may be expected to perform.

  • Design and implement exercise class curriculum based on current research and includes warm-up, workout, and cool-down periods. Provides and prepares music for format. Collaborates with lead staff and/or supervisor to develop, plan and schedule classes.
  • Greets students as they enter the class area. Responds to questions from participants regarding purpose of specific exercises/routines and other fitness-related topics.
  • Prepares facility for class including equipment, lights, fans, water station and sound equipment. Cleans up area and returns all equipment to appropriate storage area at end of work shift.
  • Instructs for multiple levels of modifications for each workout to allow participation by multiple fitness levels or those with past injury.
  • Monitor participant safety during class and, if necessary, provides first aid. Follows standard procedure for emergencies for the facility where class is held. Complete and submit patron incident reports.
  • Address program specific risk management/safety issues with lead(s) and supervisor.
  • Provides excellent internal and external customer service. Offers a positive experience for patrons and co-workers.
  • Communicate with staff regarding facility, equipment, and supply needs. Request purchase of supplies, coordinating expenditures within Department policies.
  • Monitor participant behavior to ensure an environment where everyone feels welcomed, included, safe and respected while participating.
  • Respond professionally to questions, suggestions, and concerns from participants and staff regarding programs, activities, policies, and practices.
  • Remain personally accountable in seeking resolution to misunderstandings, conflicts, or performance of self or others. Respond positively to correction and accepts direction.
  • Attend staff orientations and trainings, as required.
  • Completes all forms, time sheets, and documentation as appropriate.
  • May assist with class publicity and marketing, class registration, and class evaluation.
  • Maintains current certifications as necessary for position.
  • Provides information on other programs and activities offered by the Parks & Recreation Department.
  • Represents the City of Albany by responding to the public, citizens, its employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner while continuously maintaining a positive customer service demeanor. Regards everyone, internal and external, as a customer and deliver the best service possible in a respectful and patient manner.
  • Serves as a member of various City committees as assigned.
  • Assists other staff in the performance of their duties as assigned.
  • Maintains regular job attendance and adherence to working hours.
  • Operates a motor vehicle safely and legally.
  • May provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel.
  • Performs other related duties as required/assigned.

Supervision/Lead Work Exercised

This is a non-supervisory position. Lead work/coordination of the work of others is not a typical function assigned to this position.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education and Experience:

Two years of college or vocational training emphasis in exercise physiology, anatomy, kinesiology, or related field; and two year of professional level experience in specialty area with some teaching experience in instructing/leading group fitness and exercise classes OR any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the above-described duties.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be comfortable working with diverse populations and participants of all skill levels.
  • Certification through nationally recognized association may be required for specific area of instruction.
  • May require possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license.
  • In accordance with Human Resources substance abuse policies, incumbents in this position are subject to the City's Drug & Alcohol testing program.
  • The individual shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of themselves or others.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of: fitness/exercise program components; principles of cardiovascular fitness, kinesiology, neuromotor, balance, flexibility, muscular endurance and strength training; safety practices and precautions in performing exercises. Knowledge and skill to suggest modifications of exercise to participants with injuries or limitations. Principles of group dynamics and group interaction and emergency procedures and accident site management.

Skill in: use of tools and equipment listed.

Ability to: Instruct and demonstrate fitness exercises safely and effectively to groups of varied ages and abilities; ability to perform and instruct all exercises of assigned specialization. Maintain neat and clean appearance. Follow and give instructions in a courteous and professional manner. Interpret, explain, follow and apply department policies, keep accurate records and establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, other staff members, program participants and the general public. Communicate directions/instructions both verbally and by demonstration; observe and correct improper techniques; modify exercises for individual needs; select movements and/or music that is appropriate, safe and interesting to participants; counsel and motivate participants during class. Ability to provide good customer service in challenging situations. Ability to administer First Aid and CPR and follow emergency procedures. Identify and prevent hazards and maintain safe environment. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public; operate computers for data entry. Ability to move materials weighing up to 25 pounds unassisted on a regular basis such as storing, setting up and cleaning up equipment and supplies.
